the month of february. it is a mild day start. it's also 6:00, sharon has some traffic problems for you, marty is at first alert weather. >> let's look at how mild it is. 45 degrees on tv hill. two degrees above your normal daytime high. but it's eight degrees higher than this time yesterday morning. look for a beautiful february day. don, take it away. >> >> here is sharon in traffic control. >> >> first of all, a couple of issues, the late clearing construction on the west side of the beltway in the area of frederick road. a new problem on 77, past 32, an accident reported. another accident nearby on 32 at 29. the off ramp is closed there, speeds looking good, because of the late clearing construction we were looking at mine minor delays, it was backed up. that's a look at 95 south of might march be boulevard. now, "wjz" has the stories people are talking about this morning.

catholics worldwide. pope benedict xvi is resigning. no group appears for surprised than the cardinals the pope first told. >> it's like watching your own dad get old an admit he is not up to the duties of being the head of the family. >> reporter: the pontiff said he will step down at the end of the mon the 85-year-old told cardinals he no longer has the strength to do the job. he is the first pope to resign in 600 years. experts say it's something that just doesn't happen. >> a culture where biblical doctrine rules, tradition is steadfast and change is slow. faithful wondering what happens next. >> whoever they elect must first and foremost be a faithful and loverring teacher. >> >> reporter: who will become the next pope? that's the question here in baltimore, the oldest archdiocese in the country.

the two met on an online dating site. a horrifying discovery for firefighters inside of this northwest baltimore home. in the base machine. the body of 32-year-old jennifer cony eric kirschner rs, face down, tied with electrical chords. she had been beaten in the head. police have arrested carter, a man she met online. investigators believe he beat her, tied her up, dragged her into the basement and then lit her house on fire. >> she was a good person. she really didn't deserve this. every time i come out of my house, i think about it and it makes me sad. >> >> reporter: neighbors noticed her car missing. police found her car saturday morning here at the freemont. behind the wheel, monty carter. investigators say there was blood on his jeans and shoes. he told them he stole her atm card and wept on a drug binge.

he claims he dated her after they met online. but he claimed he had not seen her in weeks. this is a tragic reminer of the dangers of the internet. >> if you are a predator, these are perfect hunting grounds for to you find vulnerability in other people. >> >> reporter: jennifer conyers worked for the city since 200. a spokesman for the department said she was a valued employee and offered deepest sympathies to friends and family. >> >> carter has been denied bail. >> >> this morning, many mourning the loss of a carol county high school math teacher who died when his car collided with a school bus. 24-year-old devon spence was driving in westminster yesterday when his car slid into the bus. five students were on board, none of them injured. investigators believe an icy patch on the pavement played a big role in the crash.

>> >> frederick county, animal cruelty under investigation. charges filed in the death of one horse there, as derrick balcore reports, it was what was discovered somewhere else that had people so upset. >> reporter: rain rot, this horse and 24 others voluntarily surrendered to rescue groups now nursing them back to order. the horse as owner faces two animal cruelty charges after animal control found one horse in desperate need of medical attention. it later died. >> the foals were the ones in the worst condition. >> reporter: lori runs a rescue group that took in some of the sick horses. when she went looking for some unaccounted horses on the two frederick county properties that james houseman leased, she found many dead horses. many decayed to the bone, some

still rotting carcasses. those pictures too disturbing for us to show. >> i really don't know who could do that to an animal and leave them like they were garbage. >> reporter: there is nothing in the law to stop farm owners from leaving exposed carcasses on their property. animal control is still investigating. for now, there is little they can do about it. >> the longer an animal carcass is left to decompose, the harder it is to make and prove points with regard toen a mal cruelty. >> reporter: meaning animal rescuers might not ever know how these horses died. >> as for james houseman, he is facing two counts of animal cruelty. first scheduled court appearance set for march 6th. "wjz" "eyewitness news." he was prefersly convicted on 14 counts up in

pennsylvania. >> >> mayor stephanie rollins blake is calling for drastic measures to deal with the city's budget crisis. in the annual state of the city address, the mayor is proposing cutting the city's workforce by 10% over the next eight years and increasing hours worked by firefighters. the mayor wants to change the pension system for city employees and eliminate tax exemptions for nonprofit groups. >> i will not allow the structural deficit to be balanced solely on the backs of city employees, not on my watch. >> a recent report says the city could be facing a $2 billion budget short fall over the next decade. >> >> spring training report, orioles manager said he is anticipating the upcoming competition between young

be looking at a huge snowstorm, because the low gets off shore and starts to fling moisture our way. into cold air, two plus two equals 40. however having said that. it's warm. we are going to go to a high of 50 today. seasonably warm for the past few days. i'm not even sure the ground in many locations is below 32. tomorrow, a high of 43, rain in the afternoon and evening. we could see a burst of snow, it is going down to 33 degrees tomorrow night, but, i can't say it's even going to get problematic. something we will watch. it's coming our way, right now, it's trending to be less of an impact than you might think. we'll watch it through the day. 45, sun on valentine's day, nice. saturday, partly cloudy, 40, down to 34. it's going to get cold on sunday. don, take it away.

>> one of the best things that ever happened to the museum. the completion of the restoration shop and ability to open after 22 months and have a lot of new exhibit space. a lot of good things came from it. >> one of the best things about this is 5:45 every year on my right, the last one that came out of the shop. we have one more steam engine we are starting at the shop and each one has come back better than it was before and as a testament to the people that believed in the museum at the time to pull it all together and had the foresight to put something in place making us stronger than before. >> >> reporter: the railroad, birth place of the american railroad. this was a word wide story you got donations from all over the world. >> from the kids in kindergarten class putting their coins together to big businesses to the federal government to state. everybody pulled together because this is such a jewel.

it's 6:22, drone strikes are under the microsoap on capital hill. drones can be used for more than military maneuvers and fighting terrorists abroad, now, the national weather service. even private businesses are exploring the use of drones here in the united states. could these eyes in the sky see more than they are supposed to

in mike helgren reports on who is watching us and who is trying to stop it. >> reporter: becoming more common over the skies of maryland -- . >> this is the smoldering wreckage after a navy drone costing more than $170 million crashed last year during a test flight on maryland's eastern shore. for many, it was the first time they even had heard the powerful aircraft with no one in the cockpit was flying above us. from the atlantic coastlines to i-95 to neighborhoods across the state. >> there is no stopping this technology. anyone that thinks they can put this jeannie back in the box, that's silliness. >> >> reporter: for years, the military has used unmanned technology in hot spots around the world, from keeping an eye on the weather to helping police keep an eye on you >> men and women looking at

wilmington, just above the maryland line after a man opens fire in a delaware county courthouse. >> >> reporter: delaware police are still trying to figure out what lead to an early morning shooting inside of a wilmington courthouse. >> a lone gunman walked into the lobby area of the county courthouse and opened fire. >> >> reporter: it happened around 8:00 this morning. >> reporter: two women killed, one believed to be the suspect's ex-wife. police believe it stemmed from a domestic dispute. >> this was not a ran damage act of violin. this was the result of a custody dispute that has lasted in our court system for several years. >> reporter: two capital police officers were also shot, but were wearing bullet-proof vests and are expected to survive. the suspect was discovered dead at the scene.

saying the legendary father leo. it's interesting that you found the ministry through cooking >> i have and actually, i call it a movement. you don't have to be a priest to do it. as soon as you put this on, people think it's a divine act. maybe it is, jesus used to feed people all of the time. >> let's honestest about it. you really know what you are doing >> i do. i -- i studied for awhile at the cordon blue and my mom is a great cook. i think part of the reason i had friends go growing up is because she cooked. .

will affect it and add holy water to it as well. can't you just imagine -- how long did it take you to come up with spicing up married life? >> to honestest with you, 12 chapters, one for each month. it's only 12 chapters, but it took me about five years because i was compiling information from different studies, whether religious or secular about how to improve and strengthen married life. we finally released it on september of 2012, which just happened to be mom and dad's 50th wedding anniversary month. >> they got the dedication. >> they did. are you kidding me. >> how do you minister people through a cook book? >> it's a great question. i think when we eat, we think

the purpose is to fill the body. i have chapters that talk about aspects of married life and so i want them not on to talk, but to eat and not only to eat, but to have a conversation around the topics of marriage. how often does a couple talk about marriage? privately and romantically and joyfully? >> but food is the basis of a lot of ethnic 'tisty and religion. we have a saying here on friday and it goes back to southern baptist churches. when the service is almost over, it's on with chicken. >> it's on with chicken. >> leaving on sunday, you are going to go eat gran ma's home fried chicken >> i want to giver people a religious experience of food.
